EV charging near Twickenham Stadium

A matchday car park is a school playground with a volunteer on the gate. There is no charger. Here is how to plan around that.

The short version: arrive with enough range to get home plus 20%, because you won't charge at the car park. If you need a top-up, do it on the way in at a rapid charger before you reach the A316 queues, or on the way out once you are clear of Twickenham.

Why there is nothing at the ground

The stadium's own charge points (a handful of 7 kW and faster units in the media compound off Rugby Road) are used on quiet days through the bp pulse app and aren't part of the matchday public car parks. The school, scout and church car parks are fields and playgrounds run by volunteers for four hours: no chargers, and no plans for any. Driveways on the booking sites occasionally list a charger, and the listing will say so; treat it as a bonus, not a plan.

The one place near the ground where you might find a charge bay is Arragon Road multi-storey in Twickenham town centre; even if there is one, on a match day you should assume it is taken.

Charging on the way in

The trick is to charge before you join the matchday traffic, which starts about two hours before kick-off at the Whitton Road roundabout and earlier on the big days.

Check Zapmap or your car's app on the morning for what is working. A two-bay rapid with one out of order and a queue of three is the normal state of things on a Saturday afternoon.

Charging while you are here

If you park further out, you can sometimes combine parking with charging:

Charging on the way out

Don't try to charge within a mile of the ground in the two hours after the final whistle; every bay is full and the roads to reach them are the ones that are jammed. Get onto the A316 first. Westbound, the first sensible stops are the A312 and the M3 services; eastbound, Chiswick and Kew. If you have waited the traffic out in the pub (which we recommend anyway: getting out after the match), the local chargers are freer by then.

Range planning for a match day

Then pick a car park like anyone else: the closer ones fill first, and none of them will charge your car.

Questions drivers ask

Can I charge my electric car at Twickenham Stadium on a match day?
Not in practice. The stadium has a handful of charge points in its media compound, used on non-match days through the bp pulse app, but they are not part of the public matchday car parks. None of the school, scout or church car parks have chargers. Arrive with enough charge to get home, or plan a rapid charge on the way.
Where is the nearest rapid charger to Twickenham Stadium?
The rapid chargers you can rely on are on the way in rather than at the ground: motorway services on the M3 and M4, the retail parks and supermarkets along the A316 and A4, and hubs in Richmond, Hounslow and Kingston. Check Zapmap for the live status on the day, because a queue at a two-bay rapid on a match afternoon is common.
Are there on-street chargers in Twickenham?
Yes, Richmond council has installed lamp-post and bollard chargers (char.gy and similar) on residential streets across Twickenham, St Margarets and Whitton. They are slow (5–7 kW), and on match days the bays around them are inside the event zone, so you can only use them if you are legitimately parked there, which mostly means residents and their visitors.
Does ULEZ apply to electric cars?
Electric cars meet the ULEZ standard, so there is no daily charge. You still have to follow the same parking rules as everyone else.
